Meet Gina Clark Hurry

For Gina Hurry, painting is an act of creation, a yearning for more, and a response to life.

Her love of color and light were first apparent when she traveled with her grandparents to Europe as a child and was captivated by the ceilings of the cathedrals and the stained glass windows of the churches. The knowledge of places like those, combined with formal training and the images and colors in her mind, all come together to make each of Gina’s paintings a bright, expressive place for the soul.

Gina graduated with a bachelor of fine arts from Birmingham Southern College and settled in Birmingham, Alabama. As a mother of three young children, Gina often paints amidst a flurry of activity. Sometimes she sets her easel in the kitchen and juggles paint and peanut butter and jelly, while managing the small hands that clutch crawdads from the creek. Other times she paints outside in the sun with the wind whistling through the trees. Painting is as essential to her as the air she breathes. And people, locations, struggles, and life all churn this longing in Gina to pour out her spirit in paint. Acrylics match Gina’s lifestyle.

They forgive; they communicate; and they respond. Acrylics are easily changed. Gina often washes away wet paint from her canvas only to paint it anew, which allows her to get lost in the fluidity of the paint as she seeks redemption, finds contentment, and speaks tenderly through her work.
